Grassroots North Shore emphatically and enthusiastically endorses Judge Janet Protasiewicz.

Judge Protasiewicz brings 25 years of prosecutorial experience and nine years of experience on the bench of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court. A graduate of Marquette University Law School, she is superbly qualified for a seat on Wisconsin's Supreme Court.

Her values align with the values of Grassroots North Shore. And while she will not specify how she would rule on any case that might come before the court, she asserts that she takes a common sense approach to her judicial work, following the facts of each case and applying the law fairly.

Here are some of the core values she would bring to the court:

  • On redistricting and gerrymandering, she believes that every vote should have equal weight and that voters should choose their representatives in reasonably competitive districts. That way we will have truly representative governments.

  • She has been endorsed by the Electrical Workers Union, the Teamsters Joint Council 39, and many others. She's also been endorsed by a large number of elected officials, judges, and community leaders. As John Nichols wrote in a Cap Times opinion piece after the primary election, "Primary vote shows that Protasiewicz’ values appeal to Wisconsin voters."

  • As she discusses her values, it is clear that she believes, as we do, that voters have a right to participate in free and fair elections, workers have a right to organize, and women have a right to control their own bodies.

On her website, she has posted a letter that sums up why she is running, and coincidently why Grassroots North Shore endorses her.

She writes, "I see our criminal and civil justice system — and our democracy — under attack by radical partisanship. Our system works because the law is predictable. You can read the constitution, the statutes, and case law, and know what to expect, but as we can see on an almost-daily basis, our most closely-held constitutional rights are under attack by radical right-wing extremists. We must restore confidence that judges aren’t just trying to reach their favored outcomes, but actually applying the law and the constitution."

Judge Janet Protasiewicz has shown that she is a fair-minded, independent jurist. And she should become Justice Proasiewicz on April 4.
